Long Range Broad Agency Announcements (LRBAA's)

With the SBIR program currently inactive, many federal agencies continue to engage small businesses through Long Range Broad Agency Announcements (LRBAAs). These are sometimes referred to as Open BAA, Standing BAA, Umbrella BAA, or a BAA with Rolling Admissions. LRBAAs offer a flexible pathway for innovative companies to present research and development ideas directly to government sponsors. Read on.

SOCOM Vulcan Program

The Vulcan program, led by United States Special Operations Command, offers small businesses and startups quick access to the defense market. It connects early-stage technologies with operators, provides non-dilutive seed funding, enables rapid testing, and simplifies pathways to follow-on contracts, avoiding traditional delays.

For seed-stage companies, Vulcan functions as a government-backed accelerator. SOCOM seeks solutions that solve current operational challenges, not polished marketing or lengthy defense histories. Companies with a clear mission, practical use cases, and the ability to iterate quickly stand out. Right now, open Vulcan opportunities are actively accepting submissions, making this an ideal time to engage. Small businesses can review directly through SOCOM’s Vulcan portal. Navigating Vulcan effectively, however, often requires translating commercial innovation into military need. That’s where BBCetc can help.

BBCetc works with small businesses to align technology with SOCOM priorities, help craft concise and mission-focused submissions, and position Vulcan participation for follow-on funding and long-term growth. Vulcan opens the door to SOCOM, but preparation determines who gets through it. With open opportunities available now and the right guidance, small businesses can move quickly from experimentation to impact.

NIDA "$100,000 Start an SUD Startup" Challenge

The annual “$100,000 Start an SUD Startup” Challenge goal is to support research ideas in the areas of drug use, misuse, and substance use disorder (SUD) that are intended to be the foundation for developing successful new startups. NIDA expects that the Challenge will enable the winning Teams to test the premise that their research idea can be fostered into a biotech startup, and that eventually the newly created startups will contribute to the pool of innovative small business companies that can successfully compete for NIDA’s SBIR/STTR funding.
