"From the Sources' Mouth” NSF Recap

    nsf_logo_f_4068c845-8a66-4bfa-ab23-f052e70f5f0c

Dr. Ben Schrag from NSF provided insight on the specifics of SBIR/STTR at NSF on April 18th. Here are some highlights from the event:

    • There are 14 Program Directors at NSF. Each of the PDs has experience at technology startups, many have won SBIR while in startups. They all have advanced degrees. Each PD manages ~60 portfolio companies at any given time.
    • NSF processes ~12,000 Project Pitches each year. They are approving around 50% of the Pitches that invites the approved applicant to submit a Full Proposal within one year.
    • NSF processes about 2500 Full Proposals each year.   The current acceptance rate is ~12-15% for Phase I submissions.
    • 90% of Phase I awardees have 10 or fewer employees
    • 90% of Phase I awardees have never received a SBIR/STTR Phase II award from ANY agency
    • 80% of awardee companies started in the past 5 years
    • A majority of Phase I awardees are to first time applicants to NSF
    • NSF has re-opened a Phase I submission window. The open window closes on May 15, 2024. Any invited companies with an active Project Pitch (OR a Project Pitch that expired between March 4-April 15, 2024) can submit a Phase I Full Proposal in this window. Phase II proposals are not being accepted at this time.
    • The FY24 solicitation is expected to be released in May. While specific dates were not disclosed, there is a high likelihood that the remaining windows in 2024 will be in July and November.

A recording of the NSF FTSM (and previous months too!) can be found here.
